“Need a hand up here!” Connie called.

Zayden came to the stairs, seeing them up at the top and the condition Piper was in. He rushed up, and snatched the crutch, tossing it aside and sweeping the soldier off of her feet in one fluid motion.

“Hey!” she cried as he settled her into his arms.

“Apologies, but you’ll be thanking me in just a minute,” he said, and led the charge down the stairwell to the first floor, making a quick turn and running down the hallway towards the far exit of the building.

As they crashed through the doors, they spotted Max’s car idling just a few yards away, with a pack of easily fifty zombies another ten yards past it.

“Yeah, thank you,” Piper breathed.

“Get her in the car!” Connie barked, and Zayden rushed to the back seat to get the soldier situated as the skeet shooter champion went into action.

She grabbed a few more shells from her bag and slammed them into the shotgun before firing. She picked her targets quickly and squeezed the trigger rapidly. Shooting slow moving and head high targets was a lot easier than shooting skeet, and the heads exploded one after the other. She dropped four before turning back to the car and getting into the front seat.

“Go go go!” she yelled.

Max floored it, driving down the sidewalk and back to the road before going back towards the highway. He had to maneuver around a few zombies before getting in the clear.

Just outside of town, they stopped for a moment, looking back at their small community that was now swallowed by zombies. The makeshift barricade had completely failed, and thousands of ghouls swarmed the town, marching forward down the highway.

“Don’t know about y’all, but I’ve seen more than enough,” Zayden muttered.

“Where are we going?” Max asked.

“We gotta go to Paola,” Connie said.

Zayden shook his head. “That’s only like ten miles,” he said. “That’s not nearly far enough away from these things.”

“That’s the point,” she insisted. “Few hours from now, what just overran us will be bearing down on them. At the very least, we need to warn them.”

Max nodded. “Good enough for me,” he said, and hit the gas.

As the vehicle sped away from town, Connie looked back one last time, sadness gripping her heart.

I’m sorry sis, she thought, tears swelling in her eyes, rest easy.
